The City of Thunder Bay invites residents to celebrate National Public Works Week from May 18 - 24, with events that recognize the essential services that keep our city running. The celebration includes a fun-filled Public Works Open House and new this year, two public facility tours.
"These events are a great opportunity for residents to learn more about the important work happening behind the scenes," said Kayla Dixon, Commissioner – Infrastructure & Operations. "We’re proud to invite the community to see the equipment, meet our staff, and learn more about how public works touches everyday life.
Public Works Open House – Free Community Event
Join us on Saturday, May 24, from 10 am to 1 pm, at Mountdale Yard for the Public Works Open House — a free, family-friendly event open to all ages!
Come explore the world of public works and enjoy:
- A chance to climb inside and explore large City vehicles including an excavator, garbage truck, rock truck, a plow, and more
- Bouncy castles and live music
- Games, prizes, and free snacks
- Opportunities to meet City staff and learn about essential services like road maintenance, clean water, garbage collection, and more
This event is a great way to discover how public works supports the day-to-day life of everyone in Thunder Bay.
As part of this year’s expanded Public Works Week celebrations, the City is also offering two brand-new tours:
Water Treatment Plant Tour
- Thursday, May 22, at 11 am
- Learn how Thunder Bay delivers safe, clean drinking water
- Registration required; free bus transportation available

Fire Station 3 Tour & Open House
- Drop-in on Friday, May 23, from 3:30 to 5:30 pm
- 60 Water Street South
- Explore fire trucks, tour the station, and learn about fire safety from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue staff
- No registration required
"Whether you're curious about big trucks, clean water, fire safety, or just want to meet the dedicated people who keep our city running, there’s something for everyone during Public Works Week," said Amanda Nason, Communications Officer – Infrastructure & Operations Department. “It’s a great way for families to learn, have fun, and connect with the essential services that support daily life in Thunder Bay.
National Public Works Week takes place from May 18 - 24, 2025 and is recognized across North America as an opportunity to educate residents about public works and celebrate the work these professionals provide.
