March 24, 2026 – The City is continuing its analysis of potential designated encampment locations, which includes processing a substantial amount of community input and reviewing the historical context of the sites under consideration. As this work progresses, the complexity of the evaluations has resulted in the need for additional time to complete due diligence, including preliminary environmental assessments, and further studies where needed.

As a result, the City of Thunder Bay has announced a delay of the upcoming Special Committee of the Whole meeting that was intended to address this matter. The planned date of Tuesday, March 31, has been cancelled. A new meeting date and time will be determined and presented to City Council for approval.

“This is complex work that requires thorough analysis and careful consideration,” said Rilee Willianen, Supervisor – Encampment Response. “Taking the necessary time to complete this review is essential to bringing forward informed recommendations for Council’s consideration.”

The City will continue to keep the public informed as this work moves forward.
