A Rosedale Ave. apartment owner has plead guilty to nine counts of violating the fire code in Provincial Offences Court. The charges were laid for not testing various fire safety systems, not retaining records, and not repairing fire separations in two 6 unit apartment buildings.  The owner was fined $2,000 per count for a total of $18,000 plus victim fine surcharge and costs. The charge stems from an October 2018 Inspection.

“A landlord is responsible for carrying out the provisions of the Fire Code,” said Deputy Fire Chief Greg Hankkio. “Monthly and annual checks must be completed and records must be kept.”

Failing to test and inspect fire and life safety systems can result with a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that it if you live in an apartment building with a Fire Alarm System, then the landlord should be conducting monthly and annual tests.
