The City of Thunder Bay is proud to announce that its events have received three awards from Festivals & Events Ontario, recognizing excellence in event delivery, community engagement, and partnership.
The City of Thunder Bay’s Event Series, presented by Ontario Power Generation (OPG), received a Sponsor of the Year Achievement Award. OPG is the annual Presenting Sponsor of the City’s events and longstanding Main Stage Sponsor. OPG’s contributions play a significant role in ensuring that these large-scale, free community events remain accessible, engaging, and impactful for residents and visitors alike.
“OPG is honoured to be nominated by the City of Thunder Bay and recognized as Sponsor of the Year by Festivals & Events Ontario. Thunder Bay’s Community Event Series creates inclusive spaces where families, neighbours, and visitors can celebrate the spirit of Northwestern Ontario. OPG’s investment through the Power for Change Project showcases what’s possible when we work together to support vibrant, community-driven experiences,” said Brian Mason, Director, Plant Operations for Northwestern Ontario at OPG.
In addition to the Sponsor of the Year Achievement Award, two City events have been named among the Top 100 Festivals & Events in Ontario for 2026:
- Kite Festival – coming up on June 7 at Chippewa Park
- SnowDay on the Waterfront – held February 16 at Marina Park
By offering free, accessible events, the City of Thunder Bay continues to prioritize inclusion and community connection, ensuring residents and visitors can participate in shared cultural experiences.
“Our Cultural Development, Community Programming & Events team continues to show incredible passion and commitment for delivering high-quality, award-winning events that are cherished by our community and visitors,” said Laurie Abthorpe, Supervisor – Cultural Development, Community Programming & Events. “We sincerely appreciate this recognition from Festivals and Events Ontario and look forward to continuing to create meaningful and memorable community celebrations for everyone to enjoy.”
