Due to the prolonged period of cold, wet weather this spring, the City of Thunder Bay has delayed the official opening of bike lanes.

Bike lanes typically open on May 1 after street sweeping operations have been completed. The City will continue sweeping operations to clear the roadway and bike lanes of winter sand and debris. An update will be provided to the public when the bike lanes are clear and open for use. Once the sweeping has finished and the bike lanes are opened, on-street parking restrictions effecting designated bike lanes will be enforced.

With the weather warming, more riders are using the roads and motorists are reminded to please be aware and mindful of riders and share the road by slowing down and moving over for bikes.

Bike lanes are a part of the City’s Active Transportation Network, aimed to help build a healthy, vibrant and equitable community. Benefits of active transportation can range from increasing personal health and wellness, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing household travel costs.
