The City of Thunder Bay is looking for public input as it considers the surplus of a parcel of land on Junot Avenue for community development.

The lands, which form part of Junot Park, are being considered for surplus to support a proposed faith-based community campus that would include a place of worship, a gymnasium, an educational facility, and residential units.

City administration believes the proposed development may contribute positively to the community without having material impact on the function of the park. The existing playground and parking lot would remain in place. By increasing community usage, the proposed development also has the potential to benefit the park.

The site under consideration is located at the southwest corner of Junot Park, beside the Junot Avenue Fire Station. The land being proposed for surplus represents approximately 1.2 hectares (3 acres) of the park’s 5.4 hectares (13.4 acres).

Residents can learn more about this project by visiting thunderbay.ca/getinvolved. Upcoming opportunities to provide input include:

  • A public survey available now online at thunderbay.ca/getinvolved, and in hard copy at City Hall and branches of the Thunder Bay Public Library. The survey is open through June 1.
  • An open house on Thursday, May 28 (drop in 6-8pm) at the 55 Plus Centre.

City administration will present the surplus proposal to City Council’s Growth Standing Committee for review and feedback on June 16. The decision on whether to declare the lands surplus will be made by City Council on July 7.
