WHEREAS, deafblindness is a unique disability that incorporates the loss of both sight and hearing. Individuals who are deafblind can live full, meaningful lives as independently as possible with the right supports in place, such as intervener services; and
WHEREAS, Canadian Hellen Keller Centre is a not-for-profit organization that supports individuals who are deafblind to increase their independence and improve their quality of life through specialized services; and
WHEREAS, everyone is encouraged to help promote deafbindness by attending an awareness event and proclaiming June as National Deafblind Awareness Month in your community and checking out the calendar of events on the Deafblind Network Ontario website that includes flag raisings and light up of local landmarks in communities across Canada; and
WHEREAS, June should be designated as national Deafblind Awareness Month to recognize and celebrate the contributions that individuals who are deafblind make in their communities who the support of interveners who serve as a bridge to communication for individuals who are deafblind. NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Bill Mauro, on behalf of Thunder Bay City Council, do hereby proclaim June as “Deafblind Awareness Month” in the City of Thunder Bay
