Starting in early October 2025, the City of Thunder Bay’s new Designated Truck Route (DTR) will come into effect as part of a plan to enhance public safety.
Under the new DTR, transport trucks will be redirected off Dawson Road and Arthur Street, and instead required to use Highway 11/17, which is specifically built to higher design standards and maintenance operations.
“Redirecting heavy truck traffic to Highway 11/17 is a strategic move that prioritizes the safety of our residents while preserving the integrity of our local roads,” said Kayla Dixon, Commissioner of Infrastructure & Operations.
An engineering assessment was completed in 2024 to validate previous findings with new traffic data. City Council approved Bylaw 211-2025 for a DTR to establish the new truck route.
DTR key priorities:
- Public safety first: The DTR is designed to reduce transport truck-related risks for drivers.
- Traffic shift: Heavy commercial trucks will now use Hwy 11/17 as their main route through the City, keeping them off Dawson Road and Arthur Street.
- Local deliveries continue: Transport trucks will still be able to travel on City streets including Dawson Road and Arthur Street, for local deliveries only, supporting businesses.
The Thunder Bay Police Service will be enforcing the new route to maintain community safety.
