August 21, 2026 - With the 2026 Municipal Election approaching on October 26, the City of Thunder Bay is reminding candidates, property owners, and residents of the rules governing election signs.

Election signs are an important part of the democratic process, and all signs must comply with the City’s Election Sign By-law.

When can signs be in public view?

  • Election signs cannot be placed until Tuesday, August 25, 2026, the Tuesday following Nomination Day.
  • All election signs must be removed within 72 hours following Election Day.

Are there limits on the size of signs, or on the number of signs on the same property?

  • There are no restrictions on the size of election signs; however, Billboard Signs and Mobile Signs require a permit.
  • There is no restriction on the number of election signs permitted on a property where signs are allowed under the by-law.

Where can signs be placed?

  • Election signs may be placed on private property with the consent of the property owner or occupant.
  • Election signs may be placed on boulevards in front of private property with the property owner's permission.
  • Election signs may be displayed outside of the ward in which a candidate is running.
  • Election signs may be placed on certain public property, where permitted and with authorization.

Election signs cannot be placed:

  • In City parks.
  • At or around City facilities.
  • In locations that impede safety or create an accessibility barrier, including but not limited to:
    • Traffic islands
    • Medians
    • Emergency service access routes
