The second and final Spring Leaf & Yard waste curbside collection will take place between June 10 and June 20, on residents’ regular recycling day.
“Having two collections in the spring and two again in the fall allows the City to increase the amount of leaf and yard waste collected and diverted from the landfill,” said Jason Sherband, Manager of Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “Last fall, with the two collections, we saw a significant increase in the tonnage collected. That told the City that the second collection is a valuable service for residents. We’re looking forward to seeing residents take advantage of four annual Leaf & Yard Waste collections in the future.”
Only kraft paper bags are accepted for leaf and yard waste; each filled bag must weigh less than 18 kg (40 lbs.). Bundled branches are also accepted; bundles must measure less than one metre (39 inches) long and 61 cm (24 inches) around, tied with string. There is no limit on the number of bags and bundles residents can set out for leaf and yard waste collection. Grass clippings are not accepted. Residents should place the waste at the curb before 7 am on their regular recycling day, as indicated on their waste collection calendars.
Collected leaf and yard waste is used to make soil-enriching compost at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road, given away free to residents each spring.
