In response to the significant damage caused by the July 1 storm event, the City is offering vouchers for one free tipping fee at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (Landfill) available for yard waste only, for affected households.

“We understand that the clean-up may take several weeks and that it involves a large volume of  trees, limbs and branches,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “To ease the burden of dealing with this material and ensure that to goes to the proper laydown area, we’ve introduced a temporary voucher system so that one load of yard waste per affected household can cross the scales free of charge.”

Affected residents may request a voucher for one free tipping fee, for yard waste only, to be dropped off at the Leaf & Yard Waste laydown area at the City’s Solid Waste & Recycling Facility. The vouchers are only for yard waste; mixed loads containing regular garbage will be subject to the Facility’s regular tipping fee rates. Vouchers must be presented to Landfill Site scale house staff upon crossing the inbound scale. Only one voucher will be issued per household. All vouchers will expire on Aug. 31, 2025.

To request a voucher, residents may call the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility at 807-684-2470, or email swms@thunderbay.ca. Residents may request that the voucher be mailed, or may pick it up at the Landfill Administration Building (last left turn before the scales) during business hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday.
