May 10, 2016 - Residents of Kashechewan First Nation that were evacuated to Thunder Bay on May 1, due to a threat of flooding in their home community are expected to return home as early as Thursday. The First Nation has rescinded the evacuation order indicating it is now safe for residents to return to the community.
Host communities across Northwestern Ontario including Hearst, Wawa, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing and Thunder Bay are beginning the repatriation process. Weather permitting, multiple flights will be scheduled to transfer the over 320 residents hosted in Thunder Bay.
"We are pleased to have been able to welcome the residents of Kashechewan during their time of need," said Deputy Fire Chief Dave Paxton.
