Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to multiple structural fires last week and after investigating, determined that two were caused by candles.

“We’re very concerned about the latest string of fires caused by candles,” said Fire Chief John Hay. “These fires were totally preventable. Instead of candles, we recommend choosing CSA-approved battery-powered candles.”

This incident prompted Thunder Bay Fire Rescue to remind residents that residents need to do everything they can to prevent fires from starting.

The first fire started when a candle was left unattended, and the second started in a bedroom when a candle fell off a chest of drawers and rolled under a bed. Candles should never be left unattended, not used in bedrooms, and kept away from anything flammable. Keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children and pets, and always use sturdy candle holders that won’t tip or burn.

Quick response from Fire Crews limited fire damage to the rooms of origin. Both houses sustained heat and smoke damage and are not inhabitable at this time. One occupant was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation but was released. It is strongly recommend not to attempt to fight a fire in your home.
