WHEREAS, 2.6 million Ontarians have a disability; and
WHEREAS, approximately one in four people live with a disability and face various types of accessibility challenges in their everyday life; and
WHEREAS, increased social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities has positive economic and social benefits, for persons with disabilities, for business, the economy, and society in general; and
WHEREAS, every year, starting on the last Sunday in May, Canadians celebrate National AccessAbility Week, founded as ‘National Access Awareness Week’ in 1988; and
WHEREAS, the City of Thunder Bay’s Accessibility Advisory Committee ensures that our facilities, infrastructure and services are accessible to people of all abilities; and
WHEREAS, the Committee is responsible for advising City Council on the development and implementation of the Multi-Year Municipal Accessibility Plan and advising Council on issues relating to citizens with a disability;
NOW THEREFORE, I, the Mayor of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim May 25-May31, 2025, as National AccessAbility Week, and urge my fellow citizens to recognize the importance of accessibility in our community for everyone.
