The City of Thunder Bay’s annual Kite Festival is back for its 40th Anniversary at Marina Park, this year featuring air shows by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. Presented by Ontario Power Generation, the annual celebration takes place from 11 am to 3 pm on June 3 and 4.

Event admission is FREE, and families are invited to bring their own kites and to watch professional kite flying demonstrations. The Snowbirds, the military aerobatics flight demonstration team of the Royal Canadian Air Force, will be kicking off their summer schedule at this year’s Kite Festival. The air show begins around 12 pm on both days, weather dependent.

Other highlights of Kite Festival include:

  • Snowbirds RCAF CF-18 demo cockpit on display
  • Food vendors & artisans on site
  • Youth skateboarding lessons and equipment from Female Boarder Collective
  • Art projects with Community Arts & Heritage Education Project
  • Information booths and activities throughout the park

Starting at 2:30 pm on Saturday June 3, Snowbird Pilots will be onsite signing autographs for the public.

For those planning to attend, some important details to keep in mind include:

  • To ensure a secure air space at the Marina, NO kites, drones, or other objects can be flying during the Snowbirds’ performance, or the show will be immediately halted
  • Parking is limited within Marina Park but available at the Red River Road parkade and other city lots
  • The Market Parking Lot adjacent to the splash pad and a section of the Boaters Parking Lot (Public Launch) will be closed
  • Accessible parking will be available in the Camelot Parking Lot, but reservations are required by calling 807-684-3844
  • A portion of Water Street will be closed June 2 to 4, from approximately 11:30 am to 1:30 pm
