December 16, 2025 - Pioneer Ridge Long-Term Care and Senior Services has become the first long-term care home in the City of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario to transform its care model from a traditional medical, task-oriented approach to an emotion-based model of care known as the Butterfly Approach.

The Butterfly Approach focuses on engaging with residents in the present moment and enriching their daily lives with meaning and purpose. Emotional needs are recognized as equally important as physical care, and daily routines are shaped around each resident’s unique life story, preferences, and experiences.

This transformation has fostered a stronger sense of community and belonging within Pioneer Ridge, creating an environment where people truly matter and meaningful relationships can grow and thrive.
