JUNE 2025

WHEREAS, The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms states in Article 7 that “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principals of fundamental justice” and;

WHEREAS, City Council reaffirms its commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion that strengthens our city, including individuals who identify as two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and all other diverse sexual and gender identities; and

WHEREAS, City Council stands with Thunder Bay’s 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in recognizing that more work needs to be done to ensure that members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities no longer face discriminatio
n, hate or violence because of who they are, their gender or sexual identity, or who they love; and

WHEREAS, The ‘Progress’ Pride flag is raised in celebration of Pride Month, and to honour the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in the City of Thunder Bay. The addition of the Transgender flag stripes and the Black & Brown stripes are meant to represent and highlight the achievement of Transgender People of Colour who have historically led the liberation movements for 2SLGBTQIA+ people. The original flag colours are Red signifying life; Orange is healing; Yellow is sunlight; Green represents nature; Blue symbolizes serenity, peace and harmony; and Purple represents Spirit, and;

WHEREAS, June is Pride Month, to recognize and commemorate the Stonewall Riots which took place in June 1969, in New York City, sparking a liberation movement for human rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Homophobia and Transphobia in all its forms continue towards many 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and;

WHEREAS, In recognition of the significant contributions and accomplishments of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, The City of Thunder Bay is observing Pride Month this June 2025. This celebration highlights the importance of building a community that values diversity, champions inclusivity, and values and accepts all individuals of Thunder Bay regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Ken Boshcoff, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay do hereby proclaim June 2025 as Pride month in the City of Thunder Bay and encourage citizens to continue developing understanding, inclusion and acceptance of the 2SLGBTQIA+ citizens of Thunder Bay.
