WHEREAS September 5th marks the anniversary of the 1945 Order in Council authorizing the Canadian Red Ensign to be flown from federal government buildings outside Canada. The Red Ensign remains an important historic Canadian symbol that represented our country for generations, including during both World Wars and throughout much of the 20th century.
WHEREAS Raising the Red Ensign on September 5th is a meaningful way to recognize Canada’s heritage, honour past generations of Canadians, and promote greater public awareness of our national history.
WHEREAS This flag is particularly meaningful for Canadians who have served in the military or have had members of their family serve under this flag.
WHEREAS Recognizing Red Ensign Day would be a respectful and educational addition to these commemorations and an opportunity to celebrate an important part of Canada’s history.
THEREFORE, I, Ken Boshcoff, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim September 5th, 2026 as “Red Ensign Day” in the City of Thunder Bay.
Ken Boshcoff
Mayor
