The City of Thunder Bay is encouraging residents to show their support and appreciation for their neighbourhood School Crossing Guards during Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, June 1 to June 5, 2026.

The week is an opportunity to recognize the individuals across the city whose dedication helps keep young residents safe on their daily journeys to and from school.

“Crossing Guard Appreciation Week is a chance to recognize the invaluable service provided by our local crossing guards,” said Michelle Riemer, Crossing Guard Supervisor with the City. “We extend our gratitude to them for nurturing a culture of safety in our community, one safe crossing at a time.”

School Crossing Guards play an important role in supporting student safety and helping families feel confident as children travel through school zones and across busy intersections.

Residents are encouraged to thank a crossing guard in their neighbourhood and help promote safe driving habits around school crossings. Fillable thank-you cards can be downloaded at thunderbay.ca/CrossingGuards.

  • The City of Thunder Bay is currently recruiting for School Crossing Guard positions
  • The City currently employs about 60 School Crossing Guards
  • As of Jan. 1, 2016, all vehicles and cyclists are required by the Ontario Highway Traffic Act to stop and wait until children and Crossing Guards have cleared the entire roadway at school crossings before proceeding
  • Support your local School Crossing Guards by following STOP:
    • Stop when a School Crossing Guard raises his or her stop sign
    • Take notice of whether a Guard is on duty and slow down when approaching school crossing locations
    • Obey the law. Remain stopped until all children AND the Guard have completely exited the roadway
    • Proceed with caution – obey posted speed limits, and observe all NO Stopping and NO Parking signs – park in designated areas only
