Thunder Bay Fire Rescue received a $2000 donation of combination smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) alarms today from Union Gas. The donation provided Thunder Bay Fire Rescue with 54 combination smoke/CO alarms.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue plans to use the alarms for its Smoke/CO Alarms For Everyone (SAFE) program. SAFE is an assistance-based program geared towards local homeowners who require assistance with the acquisition or installation of smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. The SAFE program was originally launched in 2015, and this is the fourth consecutive year that Union Gas has donated to it.

“The SAFE programassists homeowners who have financial or physical barriers by ensuring their homes are compliant with regulations for smoke and CO alarms,” said Fire Chief John Hay. “Smoke alarms provide the early warning needed to safely escape a fire, and CO alarms alert you to the presence of deadly carbon monoxide.”

“At Union Gas, we relentlessly ensure the safety of our communities, customers, contractors, partners and employees,” said John Gould, supervisor utility services, Union Gas. “We’re very pleased to show our support for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and the SAFE program, which will help keep people in this community safe.”

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents it is the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside all sleeping areas for homes that have a fuel-fired appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage.
