The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce the official opening of the newly completed Waterfront Transit Terminal on April 29, 2026.
The upgraded terminal on Water Street has been designed to enhance safety, accessibility, and overall convenience for both passengers and transit operators. Key features of the new facility include an expanded indoor waiting area with improved visibility, increased seating both inside and outside, new accessible entrance doors, and upgraded signage with electronic route and schedule information. The terminal has also been retrofitted in alignment with the City’s Net Zero Strategy, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability goals.
“This project represents a meaningful investment in Thunder Bay’s transit system, supporting future growth while improving the overall experience for both riders and operators,” said Brad Loroff, Manager – Transit Services. “We’re excited to welcome passengers into this new space and look forward to providing a modern, comfortable, and accessible terminal for years to come.”
“We would like to sincerely thank the public for their patience throughout construction,” said Bobbi Tait, Supervisor – Capital Facility Construction. “We appreciate the community’s understanding as we worked to complete this important infrastructure project.”
Construction of the Waterfront Transit Terminal began in July 2025. During this time, transit operations were temporarily relocated to Cumberland Street North to maintain service continuity.
This project is part of the City’s broader Transforming Thunder Bay Transit initiative, focused on modernizing infrastructure and improving service for the community.
