The City has unveiled this year’s exceptional individuals and organizations  inducted into the Women’s History Month Exhibit, as well as the related artwork to be featured on the City’s newest Art Bus.

Each October during Women’s History Month, new inductees are added to the City’s Women’s History Month online exhibit, recognizing and celebrating women of all ages who have played important roles in the Thunder Bay’s history and development.

This year’s inductees are: Rebecca Johnson, Lisa Laco, Eva Maude Powley, the Northwestern Ontario Women’s Centre, and the Rosies of the North Project.

“This web exhibit is a wonderful way to honour and highlight the remarkable women who have helped shape our city,” said Christina Wakefield, City Archivist. “Each year we look forward to discovering more about the women from our community, and celebrating their accomplishments.”

The design for the City’s newest Art Bus, based on the Women’s History Month online exhibit, was developed by local artist Shelby Wideman and selected through a Call to Artists earlier this year.

“My goal was to celebrate the diverse women who have been nominated in the past as well as the new nominations this year,” said Shelby Wideman. “I wanted them to be the main focus. Through the vibrant colours of the portraits, I hope to capture and inspire viewers and spark meaningful conversations about the everlasting impact of women throughout our city.”

The Women’s History Art Bus is made possible with support from the Public Art Committee, Thunder Bay Transit, Thunder Bay Archives, and the City’s Recreation & Culture Division, with a portion of project funding from the Clean, Green & Beautiful Committee Emerging Project Fund.
