WHEREAS, June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), the United Nations designated day to voice our opposition to the abuse inflicted on older people; and

WHEREAS, Thunder Bay’s seniors are valued members of society and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they live safely and with dignity; and

WHEREAS, Abuse of older people is a tragedy inflicted on vulnerable seniors and an ever-increasing problem in today’s society that crosses all cultural, gender, social and financial boundaries; and

WHEREAS, We are all responsible for building safer communities for Thunder Bay’s seniors and would encourage all Thunder Bay residents to join in solidarity with the Community Elder Abuse Prevention Committee in recognizing and celebrating the accomplishments of Thunder Bay’s Seniors.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Keith Hobbs, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim June 15, 2018 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in the City of Thunder Bay.
