WHEREAS, Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most common inherited blood disorder in the world, affecting millions of people globally, including many individuals and families here in Ontario; and

WHEREAS, SCD causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down, leading to serve pain, organ damage, and other serious health complications that impact quality of life and life expectancy; and

WHEREAS, early diagnosis through newborn screening, comprehensive care, community education, and increased research funding are essential to improving outcomes and supporting individuals living with Sickel Cell Disease; and

WHEREAS, the Sickle Cell Awareness Group of Ontario (SCAGO) continues to play a vital role in advocacy, education, and support for individuals and families affected by SCD, and works tirelessly to reduce health inequities and improve access to quality care; and

WHEREAS, World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those impacted, to raise awareness, and to advance the mission of equity in health for all people living with SCD.

NOW THEREFORE, I, the Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim June 19, 2025 as “World Sickle Cell Day” in the City of Thunder Bay.
