Several Thunder Bay Transit bus routes will temporarily take detours to accommodate work to rebuild roads and sewers in the downtown north core.

Starting Monday, May 6, routes 1, 2, 3M, 11, and 13 will detour because of construction closing the Red River Road and Cumberland Street intersection.

The City will provide an update when the intersection is ready to reopen and buses can resume their previous routes. The intersection is expected to open later this summer.

The construction work is part of the City’s Reimagining North Core Streetscapes project. Some of the work includes rebuilding streets and sidewalks to improve walkability, supporting more public events, and expanding patio and vendor space. Aging underground infrastructure like watermains and sanitary sewers will also be replaced.

You can find more information and detour maps for each impacted route at: www.thunderbay.ca/en/city-services/service-alerts.aspx

Area businesses will remain open with pedestrian access intact during construction. Please visit the City’s project website for further details: https://www.thunderbay.ca/en/city-hall/north-core-street-scape-project.aspx
