The City of Thunder Bay is embarking on a once-in-a-generation project to redesign the streets in the North Core/Waterfront District area. This opportunity exists because the watermains and sewers below the street are at the end of their useful life and need to be replaced; work which will require the excavation of the streets from storefront to storefront.

Artistic rendering of the area after construction

Project Goals
  • Replace aging underground infrastructure – watermains, sanitary sewers and storm sewers
  • Replace the road surface with decorative pavers
  • Beautify the streetscape with the installation of new sidewalks, streetlighting, traffic signals and public spaces
  • Enhance pedestrian experience, where pedestrian safety is prioritized

BUSINESSES IN THE AREA ARE OPEN DURING CONSTRUCTION

Visit The Waterfront District's website to see a listing of all businesses in the area

Phase 1: COMPLETE

  • Closure and construction of Cumberland Street & Red River Road intersection up to St. Paul Street
  • Directional change on Cooke Street from May 1, with traffic flowing West to East

Phase 2: COMPLETE

  • Closure at Cumberland St. and Red River Rd. intersection remains in place
  • Red River Road closure extends to Court St. as construction zone expands

Phase 3: COMPLETE

  • Reopening of Red River Road & Cumberland Street intersection up to St. Paul Street
  • Finalization of Red River Road section from St. Paul Street to Court Street
