City releases proposed 2026 Municipal Operating Budget

The City of Thunder Bay unveiled the proposed 2026 Municipal Operating Budget today during a presentation at City Hall, outlining a fiscally responsible plan that balances Council’s budget mandate with continued investment in essential services and community priorities.

January 7, 2026 - The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce the hours of operation for the Centennial Botanical Conservatory, beginning Thursday, January 8, 2026.

The December soft launch drew an enthusiastic crowd, showcasing the community’s excitement to explore the revitalized Conservatory and its lush indoor gardens.

Additional Carbon Monoxide Alarm Requirements begin January 1

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds residents that it is the law to have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Carbon Monoxide alarms are required to be installed outside any sleeping area if your home has a fuel-fired appliance, a fireplace or an attached garage. 

The new Fire Code requirements coming into effect on January 1, 2026, will expand CO alarm installation in: 

  • Existing Homes: Alarms will now be required on every storey, not just near sleeping areas.
