The City of Thunder Bay is providing an update on the development of its Indoor Turf Facility, a project designed to offer year-round sports and recreational opportunities for the community.

In Fall 2024, three design/build teams were selected and are now preparing proposals, which are due by February 2025. Once a winning design is selected, the City will finalize the design details and explore any additional cost-saving measures. Pending City Council’s approval of the selected design, construction is expected to begin in Summer 2025, with the facility projected to open by Fall 2026.

“This is a very exciting milestone for our community," said Kelvin Jankowski, Manager – Capital Facilities Construction. “The new Indoor Turf Facility will provide year-round opportunities for sports and recreation, benefiting over 6,000 participants across soccer, football, field lacrosse, ultimate frisbee, cricket, and more.”

Aligned with City Council’s Strategic Plan, “Maamawe – Growing Together,” this project supports the “Safety and Well-being” pillar by fostering equitable access to recreation and sports. It also contributes to the City’s strategic goal of growing Thunder Bay.

The City is committed to keeping the community informed as the project progresses and will explore additional funding opportunities through sponsorships, fundraising, and grants.
