April 11, 2017 - The City of Thunder Bay received the official Canada Games flag today on its cross-country tour to the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Mayor Keith Hobbs, along with local athletes, raised the flag in McGillivray Square during a special ceremony at City Hall to celebrate Thunder Bay's past and present involvement in the Canada Games.

All former Canada Games host cities have the opportunity to host the Canada Games Flag. Thunder Bay hosted the Canada Summer Games in 1981, which were the fourth Summer Games held and is still only one of two Ontario cities to have ever hosted the Games.

"Thunder Bay has a proud history as a past Canada Games host city," said Doug Henry, Event Supervisor. "Our Canada Games Complex, built in 1981 for the Games, is still a pillar of recreation in this community that brings together athletes and families in a healthy and positive way."

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Games, which will take place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, from July 28 - Aug. 13.

The Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame is hosting a Canada Sports Hall of Fame Canada Games exhibit until Saturday, April 15. The exhibit will feature memorabilia from previous Games and all citizens are invited to experience it.
