October 1, 2015 - Free compost will be available beginning on Saturday, Oct. 30 until the end of October to Thunder Bay residents at no charge; weather permitting and while quantities last.
The success of the City's leaf and yard waste recycling program has resulted in additional compost being available at the City's Solid Waste and Recycling Facility.
Residents can pick up compost east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road. Hours of operation at the compost pick-up area are Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.
"All the leaf and yard waste we collect in the spring and fall is added to the compost pile at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility," said Jason Sherband, Manager - Solid Waste and Recycling Services. "The compost that's created is normally offered to residents in the spring, but the fact that we have so much compost left over this fall speaks to the success of the leaf and yard waste recycling programs.
The compost is ideal for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns, but is not suitable for vegetable gardens. Residents are advised to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry their compost home. Quantities limited to a maximum of one half ton load per resident.
Residents bringing garbage, recycling and/or hazardous household waste must dispose of these items at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road before visiting the special compost pick-up area. Remember to sort and secure your load and always use the appropriate laydown areas. The compost pick-up area is accessible from John Street Road only.
