WHEREAS, decades of struggle by workers and their unions have created many health and safety regulations and an employer-funded compensation system for times when those safeguards fail; and

WHEREAS, statistics show that over 300 employees die each year in Ontario because of accidents that occur while they are at work and the reality is that many of these accidents and deaths could have been prevented; and

WHEREAS, every year on June 1st, workers gather to recognize sisters and brothers who have been injured or made sick on the job and to raise their voices for safer workplaces and better treatment of all workers; and

WHEREAS, the Ontario Injured Workers Day is an opportunity to recognize the individuals who have suffered injuries and fatalities as a result of their workplace conditions.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Bill Mauro, Mayor of the City of Thunder Bay, do hereby proclaim June 1, 2019 as Injured Workers Day in the City of Thunder Bay.
