The first in a series of twelve vinyl-wrapped traffic signal boxes have recently been installed in the city. Designed by local artists, residents will notice the added colour at intersections starting with artist Ryan Newman’s work, entitled Makwa (Bear) and Floral, on display at the intersections of Oliver Road and Sanders Drive and Arthur Street and James Street.
The work of five additional artists—Jordan Danielsson, Natalie Hotson, Rebecca Knight, Vicki Nerion and boy Roland—will pop up in the spring of 2022 in high traffic locations, including some along the City’s designated image routes.
“The graphic vinyl wraps contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the streetscape by beautifying City infrastructure, adding colour and a unique story to each intersection,” said Louisa Costanzo, Supervisor - Cultural Development and Events.
Signal boxes are located near pedestrian walkways at controlled intersections and are typically plain solid-colour metal.
Once complete, the twelve locations are slated to appear in a new tour on the Thunder Bay Tours app, available for download in the Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
Project funding came courtesy of the Clean, Green and Beautiful Committee – Emerging Projects fund, and the project is a collaboration between the Public Art Committee, Recreation & Culture Division and the Engineering Division.
