This week, passengers on Thunder Bay Transit buses and Lift+ specialized buses will notice new fareboxes when they board.

The new fareboxes are part of the plan to modernize how you can pay your bus fare in Thunder Bay. The fareboxes will allow for electronic payments in the coming months, once installation and testing of the new equipment is complete.

“Working towards allowing people to pay with just the tap of a card is a big step in modernizing Transit services in Thunder Bay,” said Laura Daniels, Supervisor – Customer Care and Administrative Services with Transit Services.

Passengers can still use paper tickets, monthly passes or cash to pay for their bus fare upon boarding. In the coming months, passengers will buy tickets and passes on a reloadable card, where they can tap to pay. Cash will continue to be accepted.

The electronic fare system is a part of the City’s Digital Strategy, which is continually bringing more city services online. The new fare payment system will offer passengers convenient, accessible payment options to enhance their overall experience.

This is one of the numerous changes coming to Transit, as part of the City’s Transforming Transit plan. Additional changes to Transit will be announced in the future.
