The City of Thunder Bay is thrilled to welcome the Viking Octantis and its passengers to the city today, the first ship of many in what is planned to be a very busy cruise ship season.
The Octantis will arrive and be docked at the Pool 6 cruise ship terminal from Thursday, May 25 at 8 pm to Saturday, May 27 at 11 pm.
The excitement and enthusiasm for these ships is understandable and shared across the community. However, for public safety, the City is asking vehicles and pedestrians to avoid the Pool 6 area while this ship is in port.
Only authorized vehicles are permitted to drive to the Pool 6 terminal.
“There is currently no pedestrian access from Prince Arthur’s Landing to Pool 6, and ongoing construction traffic, plus bus, delivery and service trucks required for the ship will mean a congested roadway, so walking on the road is also not advised,” said Kayla Dixon, Director of Engineering & Operations. “A temporary walkway is under construction. There will be many opportunities later this season to see the various ships up close.”
Hillcrest Park and the lookout at the Terry Fox Monument & Visitor Centre both offer scenic views of the ship while it is in the harbour.
