The City of Thunder Bay is reminding operators of short-term rental accommodations, including those listed on platforms such as Airbnb, VRBO, and other similar platforms, that they are legally required to collect and remit the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).

The MAT applies to stays of less than 30 days in hotels, motels, and short-term rentals across the city. The 5% tax must be added to the nightly rate and submitted to the City on a regular basis – either monthly or quarterly.

“Whether you rent out a room occasionally or manage several units, the requirement is the same,” said Kathleen Cannon, Director, Revenue. “All operators must register with the City.”

The MAT supports vital community projects, helping to improve city infrastructure, enhance tourism, and enrich the local experience for both residents and visitors.

Guidance, forms, and more details about the MAT are available at thunderbay.ca/mat
