September 26, 2018 – Voter Instruction Letters (VILs) have begun arriving by mail to eligible Thunder Bay electors currently on the voters’ list for the upcoming 2018 Municipal & School Board Election.

VILs contain important information on how, when and where to vote, and will be required along with identification to cast a ballot online, by telephone and at the polling station.

“The voter instruction letter provides information that enable electors to cast their vote using the internet, telephone or in person,” says John Hannam, City Clerk and Returning Officer. “It is important that electors put their voter notification letter in a safe spot until voting time.”

Included in the VIL will be voting instructions, as well as a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN) for the voter. Information on the dates electors may vote if they are voting early or in person, as well as contact information for assistance will be included.

“The opportunity to provide voters with the option of internet and telephone voting requires us to distribute more detailed information to eligible voters this election,” added Hannam.

“By introducing these new voting methods, we are looking to improve engagement and voting participation, and give voters the opportunity to vote when it’s convenient for them - whether at home, work, or on the move.”

Online and telephone voting begins on Oct. 9 at 10 am, and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until voting closes at 8 pm on Election Day - Monday, October 22, 2018.

“If you do not receive a VIL, it means you were not included on the Voter’s List at the time when the VILs were printed and mailed out,” added Hannam.

Eligible voters can visit the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall in person (no email or fax information can be accepted) to make any additions, deletions or corrections to the Voter’s List. There will be a prescribed form to complete, and identification will be required for proof of name and qualifying address. Once this is completed, voters will be given a PIN by the election officials.

In addition, the City will be holding Revision Days from Sept. 27 – Oct. 4 at the following times and locations.
