Site Preparation Underway to Lift James Whalen Tug

In anticipation of next week’s work to raise and move the James Whalen tug, contractors will begin moving equipment and preparing the site today at Kaministiquia River Heritage Park.
In early May, the tug took on water and sank.
The pedestrian underpass at Donald Street will be closed to accommodate the equipment and recovery operations. Fencing is also going up in the park to keep onlookers at a safe distance.

Thunder Bay to Host International Overdose Awareness Day

Raising awareness of overdose and reducing the stigma of drug-related deaths are two of the goals of International Overdose Awareness Day, held annually on Aug. 31.
This year’s event at the entrance to the Kaministiquia River Heritage Park at the corner of Donald and Simpson Streets will feature community resource booths, overdose prevention training and free naloxone, as well as activities to make a tribute to a loved one.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the finale of the City’s summer event series this Wednesday, Aug. 31 at Live on the Waterfront, featuring live entertainment and a special fireworks display to finish the night.

A section of Strathcona Avenue, between Hodder Avenue and Spruce River Road in order to facilitate a culvert repair near Bare Point Road starting on Monday, Aug. 29. Local traffic will be permitted.
Crews expect to be completed the work by the Friday, Sept. 2, but weather conditions and other factors may impact project timelines.
