September 10, 2024 - Applications for the Housing Community Improvement Plan (CIP) grants are now available on the City's website through the newly expanded Property and Permits Portal.
The Portal supports the CIty's Digital Strategy, bringing more services fully online, available 24/7.
City lists nine surplus properties for sale
July 25, 2024 - The City of Thunder Bay is pleased to announce the listing of City-owned properties for sale on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS). These properties have been designated as surplus and are being sold specifically for the purpose of building infill housing and increasing urban density.
The properties are strategically located throughout the city and present an excellent opportunity for developers and builders to contribute to the growth of Thunder Bay's housing market. Interested buyers can find the listings and incentives available at buildthunderbay.ca.
City Council approves new housing incentives
July 23, 2024 - Last night, City Council voted to adopt the new Thunder Bay Housing Community Improvement Plan. This plan will allow the City to distribute Housing Accelerator dollars to successful applicants for eligible projects that build Thunder Bay by adding new residential units. These dollars will flow through the four activated grant streams: the Planning and Building Permit Fees Grant, the Multi-Residential Grant, the Additional Dwelling Units Grant, and the Servicing Grant.
‘Let’s Build Thunder Bay’ banner unveiled at City Hall
June 19, 2024 - Mayor Ken Boshcoff, along with members of the Mayor’s Task Force on Building More Homes, unveiled a banner today at City Hall that will launch the city’s “Let’s Build Thunder Bay’ campaign as part of the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF).
The City of Thunder Bay was approved for up to $20.7 million dollars in federal funding from the HAF in February 2024 to support development of over 600 new housing units over the next three years, to reach a total of 1,691 new permitted homes by February 2027.

June 07, 2024 - The City of Thunder Bay was approved for up to $20.7 million dollars in federal funding from the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) in February 2024 to support development of over 600 new housing units over the next three years, to reach a total of 1,691 new permitted homes by February 2027.
The City’s HAF Action Plan outlines eight initiatives aimed at increasing housing development. Financial incentives through this funding will be allocated in the form of grants, helping to achieve a range of housing options and affordability levels, and improving the city's financial position by adding density within the existing serviced area.
