According to By-law 74/2018 and Provincial Regulation 435/17, a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) applies to any short-term stay (less than 30 days) in places like hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, or any temporary accommodations in Thunder Bay.
Half of the revenue from this tax goes to the Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) to support tourism through the Tourism Development Fund.
The other half stays with the City and is used for infrastructure projects and programs that improve tourism and benefit both residents and visitors.
How does the City use MAT funds to promote tourism, and benefit residents and visitors?
In total, over $6 million in MAT funds have been committed and/or directed by the City of Thunder Bay to a number of projects in the community, including:- The Multi-Use Indoor Turf Facility
