Beginning today, pre-assembled wheeled garbage carts will start being delivered to selected neighbourhoods representing approximately 25% of the City’s residential households. Delivery of carts will continue over several weeks. Residents are asked to store their garbage cart in their garage or beside/behind their house.

Residences slated to receive carts in this initial program rollout received a letter from the City several weeks ago. The remaining 75% of Thunder Bay residential households will receive garbage carts in the spring of 2026.

“We’re excited to improve waste collection services to the residents of Thunder Bay with the new automated garbage cart program,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “A cart-based garbage collection system is an action item of the City’s long-term Solid Waste Management Strategy.”

Automated garbage cart usage will begin the week of Sept. 22 – residents must not use the cart for garbage collection before that time. After Sept. 22, garbage set out in cans or in garbage bags will no longer be collected. A flyer with instructions for cart usage will be attached to each delivered cart, for easy reference by residents.
