The City of Thunder Bay in cooperation with the Ontario Traffic Council’s School Crossing Programs Committee is excited to announce the expansion of the annual School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day into a week-long celebration, officially named School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week

Running from June 3rd to June 7th, 2024, this initiative aims to shine a spotlight on the dedicated individuals who tirelessly ensure the safety of our children as they journey to and from school.

Recognizing the vital contributions of School Crossing Guards deserves more than a single day of acknowledgment. By extending the celebration to a full week, the aim is to provide communities, schools, and local authorities with an extended opportunity to come together, express gratitude, and highlight the significance of the work carried out by these dedicated individuals.

“Our crossing guards provide a culture of safety in our community everyday” said Michelle Reimer, Crossing Guard Supervisor. “Extending this initiative allows us to go beyond a simple "thank you" and to better recognize and honour the contributions these unsung heroes play in promoting safe and active travel to school.”

Join Us in Celebrating School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week!

To help students express their gratitude, we are launching the School Crossing Guard Appreciation Drawing Contest. This contest aims to engage children aged 4 to 14 years in expressing their gratitude and appreciation for School Crossing Guards through art. The winning drawings will be featured on thank-you cards distributed during School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week.

The contest is open now and closes on March 29, 2024.
