Court of Appeal Dismisses CN’s Motion for Stay

The Court of Appeal for Ontario has dismissed CN’s request to stay, or postpone, the court’s order made in June 2018, which required CN to reopen the James Street Bridge for vehicle traffic and maintain the bridge in accordance with the 1906 agreement. Mayor Keith Hobbs today made the following statement in response:

Conservatory to Temporarily Close for Maintenance

The City of Thunder Bay’s Centennial Botanical Conservatory will be closed to the public on Thursday, Nov. 15 and is expected to reopen on Friday, Nov. 16 at 10 am.
The closure will allow for Union Energy to update the gas feed to the boilers.
Regular hours at the Conservatory, located at 1601 Dease St. W, are Monday through Sunday, from 10 am – 4 pm. Residents are encouraged to visit the Conservatory, which is accessible to all and is a great place to keep warm in the winter.

Fire Chief Concerned Over Recent Fire Deaths

In less than a three-week period, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue had four fire deaths as a result of three separate fire incidents. The first death occurred on October 15 in a fire at a town house on Trillium Way, the second and third death resulted from a mobile home fire on October 28 on Taylor Drive, and the most recent fire death occurred in a house fire on November 3 on Walkover St. The four recent fire deaths are the first since 2012 for the City of Thunder Bay. Brave Participants Take the Conquer the Tower Plunge

On Thursday, Nov. 8, Conquer the Tower returned to the Canada Games Complex. Twelve brave participants worked hard to raise funds in support of PRO Kids and the Thunder Bay Diving Club. The more money they raised, the higher they had to jump off the diving towers.
“We are so proud of our participants,” said Laura Daniele, PRO Kids Coordinator. “Taking the plunge off one of the towers is no small feat, and they are facing their fears in order to raise money to help others.”

Road Work on Red River Road May Cause Delays

The City of Thunder Bay’s Sewer & Water North Section will be completing water valve maintenance on Red River Road, between Junot Avenue and the Thunder Bay Expressway. Lane closures will be in effect and traffic speeds will be reduced. Motorists can expect delays on Red River Road.
Motorist are asked to avoid the intersection if possible while City crews work. Signage will be in place to guide traffic safely away from the work area.
