The City’s Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met today with community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation, and discussed efforts in managing the virus this fall and winter.

"We are in a different time than we have been in the last few months, and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone dealing with this on the front lines," said Mayor Bill Mauro. “Thank you most especially to the Health Unit, the Hospital, Emergency and Medical Services, our school boards and long-term care homes for everything you are doing to support the community in its response."

Dr. Janet DeMille, Medical Officer of Health, said that the Thunder Bay District Health Unit continues to work closely with the many schools in the community, as well as daycare and before and after school program operators to facilitate the full reopening of those settings with all the appropriate safety precautions in place.

"It is a busy time, but we recognize the significant amount of work the schools have done to limit the spread of COVID-19 in school settings," she added.

David Wright, Superintendent of Business at Lakehead Pubic Schools talked about the recent positive COVID-19 test from a student at one of their schools yesterday.

"Very quickly the Health Unit stepped up and worked closely with us throughout the day," he said "We learned that the system we put into place worked as it should, and we were well prepared."
