COVID-19: Reduced Access to Victoriaville Centre & McKellar Mall

Posted On Friday April 17, 2020

Effective immediately, the City’s Realty Services has implemented changes to the operations of Victoriaville Centre and McKellar Mall to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Both facilities will now have controlled access. Entrance/exit will only be possible from the West McKellar Mall entrance across from Renco Family Food in Centennial Square. Access is restricted to essential workers and businesses within the mall, or persons with an appointment with an essential business, or who are making a delivery or pick-up from an essential business.

All tenants and building owners will continue to have access to the facilities through the designated entrance for their operations, maintenance, inspections, or other needs, or to gain access to materials or supplies whether they are deemed as essential or non-essential services, in accordance with the Provincial Order.

Both facilities will be open with the indicated restrictions from 7 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).

Emergency Child Care Services

The Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) is coordinating emergency child care services for the community. Those who are essential frontline workers that are in need of child care can register at www.thunderbaychildcare.ca.

The City’s Algoma Child Care Centre will be one of the operating emergency child care centres. Children will be assigned to a centre based upon DSSAB prioritization and not based upon regular clientele. Registration must be completed through DSSAB and cannot be done directly through the City or the Centre.

Do Not Dispose of Garbage in City Parks and Greenspaces

There has been an increase in garbage being disposed at City parks and greenspaces, as well as in public and private properties including at Innova Business Park, and at private donation bins.

Residents are urged not to dispose of any household waste in public or private spaces. Doing so is a violation of the City by-law and overwhelms these facilities, resulting in waste and debris contaminating our city. By-law officers will be investigating violations and offenders can be fined up to $5,000.

To report a garbage or recycling concern on City property, visit: www.thunderbay.ca/reportaproblem

Garbage and recycling should be dispose of during scheduled waste and recycling collection or at the Solid Waste & Recycling Facility (Landfill Site). Permitted waste collection includes two non-tagged items of garbage (maximum weight limit of 18 kg/40 lbs per item) and there is no limit on the number of recycling items you can put out. A third item of garbage will be collected if it has a garbage item tag is attached.

Garbage item tags can be purchased over the phone using credit card payment Monday – Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, by calling 625-2266. Tags will be mailed out to residents. Tags can also be purchased in-person at the Landfill Site.

The Landfill Site continues to operate during normal business hours, however, residents are encouraged to maximize their loads to minimize trips and only visit the site when needed. The City’s three Recycling Depots also continue to operate during normal business hours.

Decisions on programs and services are being made on a daily basis. For the most up-to-date list of service changes, and additional city service information lines, visit: www.thunderbay.ca/coronavirus
