2018 Mayor’s Community Safety Award Nominations Open

September 25, 2018 – The Thunder Bay Crime Prevention Council is calling for nominations for the Eighth Annual Mayor’s Community Safety Awards, which recognize Thunder Bay residents and groups who are working to make our city safer.
Nominations officially open today, and the deadline for submissions is Oct. 5 at 4:30 pm.
The awards will be presented during a special ceremony that will take place during the Nov. 5 meeting of Thunder Bay City Council.

Indigenous Youth Event Recognizes Land and Water Resources

Members of the Working Group for Seven Youth Inquest Recommendation 115 (Watercourse and River Safety Audits) will welcome over 200 Indigenous youth to take part in cultural teachings related to water, a sunrise ceremony, a sacred fire, a round dance, the Matawa Drum, a barbecue and more.
Youth will be attending from Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School, Matawa Learning Centre, Lakehead Public Schools and Thunder Bay Catholic School Board, as well as staff, elders and other community members.

Mayor Responds to FWFN’s Call for CN to Reopen Their Bridge

Sept. 18, 2018 – The City fully understands Fort William First Nation’s (FWFN) frustration and thus their continued efforts to have CN reopen the James Street Bridge. Over the past four years the City has sought to have CN Railway honour its commitments under the 1906 agreement to repair and reopen their bridge. CN Railway has submitted a request for leave to appeal the Ontario Court of Appeal’s decision that ordered that they reopen their bridge to the Supreme Court of Canada. ...
City Seeks Input on Designated Truck Route

September 12, 2018 – The City of Thunder Bay is finalizing the development of the new Designated Truck Route.
The Designated Truck Route will be put in place to manage heavy truck traffic in the city and would lead to a new by-law implementing the plan.
A report to Council on the Designated Truck Route was withdrawn in June after stakeholders expressed concerns with the implementation of the route.

Pearl Street Access to Marina Park to Close Starting Sept. 12

September 10, 2018 – The Pearl Street access into Marina Park will close starting Wednesday, Sept. 12, and is expected to re-open on Monday, Sept. 17.
CP Rail will close the street to allow for rehabilitation work on two of the three railroad crossings. New concrete panels and resurfacing of the road is part of the work.
Traffic will be detoured to the Marina Park Overpass for the duration of the work.
