Short-Term Rental Operators Reminded of Accommodation Tax Obligations

The City of Thunder Bay is reminding operators of short-term rental accommodations, including those listed on platforms such as Airbnb, VRBO, and other similar platforms, that they are legally required to collect and remit the Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT).
The MAT applies to stays of less than 30 days in hotels, motels, and short-term rentals across the city. The 5% tax must be added to the nightly rate and submitted to the City on a regular basis – either monthly or quarterly.

The City of Thunder Bay is proud to celebrate a century of golf, community, and local heritage at Strathcona Golf Course, marking its 100th anniversary on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at the course’s grounds at 500 Hodder Ave.

Fire at Encampment Quickly Contained by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue

Shortly before midnight, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fire at an encampment near Simpson St. The callers reported that tents were ablaze and that propane cylinders were exploding at the scene.
Fire crews arrived quickly and were able to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby tents and shelters. Firefighters worked with urgency and care to protect vulnerable individuals and surrounding structures.
