Invitation to Smart Cities Drop-In Open Houses

April 13, 2018 - The City of Thunder Bay, in partnership with Fort William First Nation and other partners including Thunder Bay Police, TBayTel and Thunder Bay Hydro, is submitting an application to the Smart Cities Challenge to be shortlisted for a $10 million prize.

The Challenge encourages communities of all sizes, including municipalities, regional governments and Indigenous communities (First Nations, Métis and Inuit), to adopt a smart cities approach to improve the lives of their residents...

April 11, 2018 - The City of Thunder Bay invites citizens to sign Books of Condolences to allow them to pay their respects to the families of the victims and to the people of Humboldt, Saskatchewan deeply affected by the recent Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey Team bus tragedy.

City Launches Project SoundCheck to Reduce Sexual Violence

April 12, 2018 - The Crime Prevention Council has partnered with Sexual Abuse Centre Thunder Bay and the City's Recreation & Culture Division to bring Project SoundCheckTM to Thunder Bay. Project SoundCheckTM was founded in Ottawa in 2015 after research showed that 25% of sexual assaults in Ottawa occurred at mass gatherings like festivals and concerts.

Careless Disposal of Smoking Material Causes Fire

April 10, 2018 - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire on Feaver Road on April 1, 2018. On arrival, firefighters encountered a fully involved house fire with flames shooting through the roof. Firefighters used a defensive attack to extinguish the fire and protect adjacent buildings. The home suffered extensive damage. An investigation by Thunder Bay Fire Rescue has concluded that the fire was the result of careless disposal of smoking material.

Be Cautious of Dangerous Spring Ice Conditions

April 9, 2018 - Thunder Bay Fire Rescue is asking residents to stay off any of the frozen bodies of water in the area. As the temperature slowly increases ice conditions start to deteriorate and areas of open water become visible. 

"Water currents erode ice from underneath making it impossible to tell how thick ice actually is," said Fire Chief John Hay.  "Slippery shorelines and river banks should also be avoided."
