The City of Thunder Bay continues its downtown revitalization efforts with the reconstruction of a portion of Cumberland Street to introduce extended patio space, decorative concrete, and landscaping to the downtown core. The project also involves replacement of sanitary sewers and watermains.

Starting the week of June 8, the project will begin its first phase with the closure of Cumberland Street between Pearl and Park Streets. Phases 2 and 3 will extend from Park Avenue to Red River Road, and from Red River Road to Van Norman Street. The final phase, from Van Norman Street to Tupper Street, is anticipated to begin in 2027.

Phase 1 (beginning June 8):

  • Closure and reconstruction of Cumberland Street between the Pearl Street and Park Avenue intersections
  • 4 to 5 weeks in duration

Phase 2:

  • Continued closure of Cumberland Street between Pearl Street and Park Avenue
  • Closure and reconstruction of Cumberland Street between the Park Avenue and Red River Road intersections
  • 4 to 5 weeks in duration

Phase 3:

  • Continued closure of Cumberland Street between Pearl Street and Red River Road
  • Closure and reconstruction of Cumberland Street between the Red River Road and Van Norman Street intersections
  • 4 to 5 weeks in duration

Phase 4 (Starting 2027):

  • Closure and reconstruction of Cumberland Street between Van Norman and Tupper Street intersections

Parking

Street parking is free for 2 hours, and can be found on Court Street, Park Avenue, Red River Road, and elsewhere in Waterfront District. There is also parking available at the Waterfront Parkade.
