City Expanding Recycling Program Effective July 1

Effective July 1, the City of Thunder Bay will expand its recycling program to allow residents to recycle all #1 and #2 plastic containers. 

The recycling program expansion will allow residents to recycle additional plastic items such as clamshell containers often used for salads, vegetables, berries, or pastries. Prior to the expansion, residents were only allowed to recycle #1 and #2 plastic bottles.

The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) continues to move forward with the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) program despite the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19: City Resuming More Services for Phase 2 Reopening

The Phase 2 Summer 2020 Operations report was presented and approved by City Council last night with a number of services and facilities reopening.

Child Care
Algoma Child Care Centre has been designated as a priority site for reopening municipal child care as early as June 29. Municipal child care staff will be working in partnership with the Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board, the Ministry and families to support the transition from Algoma as an emergency child care site.

Section of Simpson Street Temporarily Closed

Simpson Street northbound from William Street to Pacific Avenue is now closed to traffic for approximately eight weeks for watermain work and resurfacing. For June 23 only, southbound traffic is also being re-routed.  The affected section of Simpson Street will reopen to southbound traffic on June 24.

City Launches Lead Water Service Replacement Loan Program

City Council approved an interest-free loan program last night that will allow property owners to borrow funds from the city to assist in the replacement of privately owned lead water service pipes.

Lead enters the water when it sits still for long periods of time in lead pipes or fixtures. Residents should routinely flush their pipes before consumption to maintain water quality at the tap.
