City proclaims Monarch Butterfly Appreciation Day

In recognition of the importance of pollinators like the Monarch Butterfly and the efforts of those who protect them, the City of Thunder Bay officially proclaimed Sept. 18 as Monarch Butterfly Appreciation Day.

The proclamation was made in honour of the late Dan Fulton, who created the Butterfly Garden on Adelaide Street and inspired many residents to get involved in supporting the Monarch and other pollinators.

Ontario Culture Days Begin Sept. 20 in Thunder Bay

The City invites everyone to participate in this year’s Ontario Culture Days, a festival that celebrates our community’s arts, culture, and creativity. The festival, running from Sept. 20 to Oct. 13, will kick off with a community event, Arts & Culture Under the Lights, at Marina Park from 6 to 9 pm. Section of Mapleward Road closes for rehabilitation

Mapleward Road will be closed between Oliver Road and the City’s Solid Waste & Recycling Facility starting today, Monday, Sept. 16.

The closure is necessary to allow for asphalt rehabilitation work, which includes asphalt removal, grading, and paving. The work is expected to take approximately one and a half weeks to complete. Traffic will be detoured around the work site using Gratton Road.

Section of Walsh Street to close Sept. 15

A section of Walsh Street between Neebing Avenue and Commerce Street will be temporarily closed to traffic on Sunday, Sept. 15 to allow for the replacement of a hydrant and water valve in the area.

This section of Walsh Street will be closed in all directions starting at 8am on Sunday. The closure is expected to last approximately 12 hours. An alternate route is available via Mary Street.

Travellers are advised to exercise caution and expect traffic delays in the area.

Online applications now open for housing grant programs

Applications for the Housing Community Improvement Plan (CIP) grants are now available on the city’s website through the newly expanded Property and Permits Portal.

The Portal supports the City’s Digital Strategy, bringing more services fully online, available 24/7.
